Young adults from different backgrounds need more support - Ethnic Multicultural Media Academy

The T2A Alliance, which stands for ‘Transition to Adulthood’ describes itself as “a broad coalition of organisations and individuals working to improve the opportunities and life chances of young people in their transition to adulthood, who are at risk of committing crime and falling into the criminal justice system.”

Their insistence for change comes after reports show young adult offenders are a significant group within the criminal justice system and are responsible for a third of all crime. Over a half of young adults in custody go on to re-offend within one year of release and up to two thirds re-offend within two years

The Guardian reports that the T2A Alliance believes that the state has in effect abandoned some of the most vulnerable people in our society and this has contributed to the creation of a young adult underclass. As such, the government needs to radically rethink the way young adults from different backgrounds are supported. The hope is that with more guidance they can be offered viable routes out of poverty and crime and into more productive lives.
